Experience America is a series of events and activities offered to visiting scholars, their families, and graduate students with dependents to help them better understand the American culture. The program is designed to introduce participants to campus and the local community.

Below is a tentative schedule for the Academic Year 2016-2017. Times and dates will become available as program plans are finalized. Registration is required for each session but most sessions are at no cost to participants. Links to register will be available soon. We hope to see you there!

Fall Events


Experience America Kick Off Party
Friday, September 16 from 12 – 2pm, Patio outside Posvar Hall (Bouquet Street side)
Take a break from the office or your lab to join OIS for a traditional American barbecue. We will share information about Pitt sports teams, fun Fall activities in Pittsburgh, and the Experience America events for the 2016-2017 year. Come to enjoy some outdoor games, a free lunch, and a chance to win free tickets to a home Pitt Football game!

Trip to Trax Farms
Saturday, Date & Time TBA, meet outside the William Pitt Union
Enjoy a day at the farm! Trax Farm’s traditional fall festival office family hayrides, kid’s activities, corn mazes, a petting zoo and pumpkin picking. Transportation to and from Trax Farms will be provided.

Lunch and Learn – Politics
Thursday,October 20 from 12 – 1:30pm, Kurtzmann Room William Pitt Union
Enjoy lunch while you learn about the U.S. political system and election process. We will discuss the upcoming presidential elections which take place on November 8, 2016. This will be a great opportunity to learn more and ask questions.

Lunch and Learn – Winter in Pittsburgh!
Wednesday, November 16 from 12 – 1:30pm, 548 William Pitt Union
Learn our best recommendations for surviving the winter months in Pittsburgh – you won’t want to miss it! We will discuss how to dress, staying healthy, and fun things to do during the Pittsburgh winter. Lunch will be provided.

Trip to the Outlet Mall

Join OIS as we take a trip to a local outlet mall to do some holiday shopping. The outlet mall is a great place to get good deals on a variety of items such as clothing, accessories, housewares and more.

If you enjoy attending cultural events like the opera, the ballet or the theater, this session is for you! Come to learn about the vast array of cultural events taking place in Pittsburgh and how you could benefit from tickets at a reduced price!

Snow Tubing at Boyce Park

Grab a tube and feel the crisp cold air hit your face as gravity send you plunging down the hill at Boyce Park. Snow tubing is a fun winter activity for the whole family – your kids will love it! Transportation will be provided to and from Boyce Park.

Museum Tour

Tour the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History right here in Oakland! This will be a great opportunity to visit and learn more about these vibrant museums.

Enjoy lunch and learn more about health and wellness in the U.S.  We will discuss health insurance and the U.S. health care system, but will also provide tips and resources on maintaining wellness during your stay in the U.S.

Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Game at PNC Park

Join OIS as we cheer on the Bucs at a baseball game! You will have the opportunity to experience PNC Park which was voted the best ballpark in America learn more about the American pastime. Transportation will be provided.
