The United States Department of State (DOS) often referred to as the State Department, is the United States federal executive department responsible for international relations of the United States, equivalent to the foreign ministry of other countries. The Department of State is also responsible for sponsoring the Exchange Visitor program for J visa statuses.

English Language Institute (ELI), University of Pittsburgh
The ELI at Pitt offers English as a second language courses from high-beginning to advanced levels and is open to anyone in the Pitt or Pittsburgh community interested in developing stronger English skills. Courses include an informal Community Conversation Course, a General English Evening Course, and skill-specific courses in the ELI’s Intensive English Program. Eligible full-time faculty, research associates, post-doctoral scholars, staff and their spouses, domestic partners, and dependent children may be eligible to use their Education Benefits for the ELI’s General English Evening Course or courses in the ELI’s Intensive English Program. Independent Schools
In addition to public schools, there are a number of independent schools offering instruction from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Generally, these schools will charge tuition although some scholarships or discounts may be available. In Pennsylvania, attendance at school is compulsory for all children ages 8 to 17 or upon graduation from high school, whichever is sooner. Public school is free for children beginning with Kindergarten to Grade 12 (approximately ages 5 to 18). Eligibility for attendance at a particular public school is based upon where you live.
